L-Lysine
Lysine is one of the 20 amino acids normally found in proteins. With its 4-aminobutyl side-chain, it is classified as a basic amino acid, along with arginine and histidine.
It is an essential amino acid, and the human nutritional requirement is 1–1.5 g daily. As a dietary supplement, it is claimed that lysine may be useful for those with herpes simplex infections; however, the evidence regarding these benefits is mixed.
Lysine is the limiting amino acid in all cereal grains, but is plentiful in all pulses (legumes). Fish are also quite rich in lysine. Plants that contain significant amounts of lysine include:
- Buffalo Gourd in seed work
- Berro, Watercress in herb
- Soybean in seed
- Carob
- Locust Bean
- St.John's Bread in seed
- Common Bean (Black Bean, Dwarf Bean, Field Bean, Flageolet Bean, French Bean, Garden Bean, Green Bean, Haricot, Haricot Bean, Haricot Vert, Kidney Bean, Navy Bean, Pop Bean, Popping Bean, Snap Bean, String Bean, Wax Bean) in sprout seedling
- Ben Nut
- Benzolive Tree
- Jacinto (Sp.)
- Moringa (aka Drumstick Tree, Horseradish Tree, Ben Oil Tree)
- West Indian Ben in shoot.
- Lentil in sprout seedling.
- Asparagus Pea
- Winged Bean (aka Goa Bean) in seed
- Fat Hen in seed
- Lentil in seed
- White Lupin in seed
- Black Caraway, Black Cumin, Fennel-Flower, Nutmeg-Flower, Roman Coriander in seed.
- Spinach
- Amaranth
- Quinoa
L-Lysine is a necessary building block for all protein in the body. L-Lysine plays a major role in calcium absorption; building muscle protein; recovering from surgery or sports injuries, and the body's production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.
It has been suggested that lysine may be beneficial for those with herpes simplex infections. However, more research is needed to fully substantiate this claim.
At this point, it appears that some studies show lysine to be helpful in herpes treatment or prevention, but several more studies are needed to confirm or refute these findings before we can make any firm recommendations for the use of lysine in oral or genital herpes treatment.
L-lysine, on the other hand, greatly dampens, or in some cases, eliminates the symptoms of these same diseases. It does NOT cure these viral infections but sometimes does force the infection to become largely inactive and exhibit much less in the way of symptoms.
Here is the kicker, though. By increasing your intake of both l-lycine and l-arginine, you encourage the pituitary gland to produce growth hormones and improve the level of free testosterone in your bloodstream. There is more good news. L-lysine is usually cheap--at least it is cheap when compared to the price of other supplements. L-glutamate, another amino acid, also helps to produce growth hormones. If you are trying to put on muscle mass, lose fat and improve your erection, adding these amino acids to your supplement program makes very good sense.
